The Plan of Salvation

The Christian Sports Journal exists for one reason: To use the vehicle of sports in order to expose people to the gospel message of Jesus Christ and help lead them into a relationship with the one true God, or to help encourage and build up those are already in a relationship with God.

If you would like to know how to be saved of your sins and how to become a follower of Christ, please take some time to read the next few paragraphs and then prepare your heart to pray the prayer at the end:

1) We have all sinned: When Adam and Eve disobeyed God in the Garden of Eden, they ushered sin into a perfect place, which led to the broken world that we live in today. From that moment on, all people were born with sin in their hearts and were separated from God.

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” – Romans 3:23 (NIV)

2) The punishment for sin is death: Once Adam and Eve sinned, the concept of physical death was introduced into the world. Even worse, so was the concept of spiritual death.

“For the wages of sin is death.” – Romans 6:23a (NIV)

3) God sent His Son for you: This radical plan was born out of His passion for mankind. That passion sent God into action and drove Him to send His only son Jesus to Earth to die for the sins of the world. That’s how much He loves you.

“For this is how God loved the world: He gave His one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.” – John 3:16

4) Jesus suffered pain for your sins: This is the greatest miracle in the history of the world. Jesus willingly chose to step out of His perfect home in Heaven and come to earth as a man so He could take on the sins of the world and give us the chance to be with Him in eternity someday.

But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.” – Romans 5:8

5) Salvation comes through confession: This means you have to acknowledge your sins to God, confess that He is the one true God, and repent (or turn) from your sins.

“If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is LORD,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” – Romans 10:9 (NIV)

7) God never gives up on you: In Matthew 18:12-14, Jesus shares a story about a shepherd who leaves behind 99 sheep so he can go find his one lost sheep. Jesus wasn’t just telling a story. He was illustrating how His passionate love for every lost soul moves Him to action. God pursues you. He desperately wants you to be saved and His love will follow you everywhere you go.

“And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow – not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.” – Romans 8:38 (NLT)

8) God has a plan for you: The Bible is full of stories that illustrate the fact that don’t have to be deemed special in the world’s eye to become a part of God’s big plan. It’s a special plan with a significant purpose.

“For I know the plans I have for you, says the LORD. They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” – Jeremiah 29:11 (NLT)

If you are ready to take the next step and enter into a relationship with God through His Son Jesus, sincerely pray this prayer and believe what you are saying with all your whole heart:

Dear Jesus, I believe that You died on the cross for my sins. I believe that You rose from the grave and conquered death. Forgive me of my sins. I will now turn my back on those things have separated me from You. I want to follow You and live the rest of my life for You. Teach me Your ways and help me become more like You. Help me to be a light to others around me who are lost and need to be found. Everything I have is now Yours. Amen.

Next Steps: Congratulations! You are now a redeemed child of God and are a part of His Kingdom! But your journey is just now beginning. In order to grow closer to the Lord and discover His purpose for your life, there are a few steps that you need to take as you walk the path of righteousness:

1) Pray often: God has allowed us the awesome privilege of communicating with Him on a personal basis. In order to truly know Him, we must talk to Him on a regular basis throughout the day. This always mean taking time to listen for His voice through the Word of the God (the Bible) and through His Holy Spirit.

“Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.– Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NLT)

2) Read the Bible daily: Another great way to draw closer to God is through His infallible Word. The Bible has all the instruction we need to get through this life.

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” – 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)

3) Find a church: You can walk this faith journey alone. Community is a vital part of the Christian’s life. You need people that will love and care for you and teach you about God’s ways. And as you grow, it is important to serve others through the church.

Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. 25 And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.– Hebrews 10:24-25 (NLT)

4) Surrender to the Spirit: We may not have Jesus with us on earth, but we do have God’s Holy Spirit who indwells us when we became saved. The Spirit is there to comfort us, guide us, and direct our paths. Listening to His voice is the key to a successful faith journey, but not listening to the Spirit will lead to difficult times and take us away from God’s perfect will.

“For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.” – Romans 8:14 (NIV)

5) Don’t give up: The devil (the enemy of your soul) will try to distract and discourage you. Above all else, don’t give up on your newfound faith in Christ no matter how difficult life might become. You will be tested and often you will feel like you can’t make it. The truth is, you can’t make it–at least not on your own. The good news is, you can make it if you stay in fellowship with Christ and rely on His strength and not your own. Through all of the previous steps, He will give you everything you need to have a fulfilled life of purpose.

“So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the LORD your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you.”  – Deuteronomy 31:6 (NIV)
